Eid and Ramadan Dressing for Men: Linen, Modesty, Heat

United Arab Emirates

Dress for Ramadan in covered, breathable natural fibres, long sleeves and full-length trousers, in calm tones rather than loud ones. For Eid al-Fitr, the tradition is to wear something new or your best, so a fresh shirt in a considered colour is the right instinct. Linen suits both because it covers without heat, and a mandarin collar shirt reads as respectful and finished without requiring a tie. Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin around 8 February, with Eid al-Fitr around 9 or 10 March, subject to moon sighting.

I am not writing this as a religious guide. I make linen shirts in Napoli, and a lot of what I get asked from the Gulf in the weeks before Ramadan is practical rather than theological. What covers properly. What survives a long day when you are not drinking water. What is appropriate for Eid prayer and then for a family lunch that runs six hours.

Those are clothing questions and I can answer them honestly. For anything about observance itself, ask someone qualified rather than a shirtmaker.

When is Ramadan in 2027?

Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin around Monday 8 February, based on astronomical calculation. The month runs 29 or 30 days, so Eid al-Fitr is expected around 9 or 10 March.

Both dates depend on the sighting of the crescent moon and are confirmed by the relevant moon sighting committee closer to the time, so treat them as planning dates rather than fixed ones. If you are ordering clothing from abroad, work backwards from the earlier date and allow for shipping and customs clearance.

How should men dress during Ramadan?

More covered than usual, and calmer.

The general expectation in daytime public spaces is long sleeves and full-length trousers rather than shorts or short sleeves. This applies to Muslims and non-Muslims alike in the Gulf, and while it is a courtesy rather than a legal requirement for visitors, it is noticed and appreciated.

Beyond coverage, the register shifts. Ramadan is a quieter month in tone. Loud prints, aggressive branding and very casual dress read as out of step. Solid colours, natural fabrics and a generally more considered silhouette fit the month better. This is not about being formal. It is about being unshowy.

Practically, that means the mandarin collar shirt is close to ideal. It covers the neckline cleanly, it looks finished without a tie, and it works from a morning at the office through to iftar with family without changing. The mandarin collar collection is where most of my Gulf customers start for exactly this reason.

Why does fabric matter more during fasting?

This is the part people underestimate. Fasting changes how your body handles heat.

Without water through the day, you have less margin. You sweat less efficiently, you feel heat sooner, and the afternoon hours before iftar are when that is most obvious. A fabric that traps heat and moisture makes a long day meaningfully harder.

Linen is the strongest answer available. Flax fibre is hollow and highly absorbent, so it moves moisture off the skin and releases it into the air, and the weave is open enough for air to pass through. You get full coverage, long sleeves and full-length trousers, without the heat cost that coverage usually carries.

Cotton is the reasonable second choice. It absorbs well but releases slowly, so it holds damp longer.

Synthetic fabric and heavy blends are the ones to avoid. They do not absorb, so moisture sits against the skin, and they hold radiant heat. A shirt labelled as a linen blend with significant polyester content behaves much closer to polyester than to linen. In February and early March the UAE is at its most pleasant, so this is less punishing than a summer Ramadan, but the principle holds.

There is more on the fibre comparison in linen versus cotton.

What should I wear for iftar?

Iftar sits at an interesting register. It is a meal, often a large one, frequently with extended family or colleagues, and it happens straight after sunset. People dress for it, but not formally.

The reliable formula is a pressed linen shirt in a mid or deep tone with linen or tailored trousers. No jacket required unless the setting is corporate. Sleeves down rather than rolled, at least at the start.

Colour is worth thinking about. Deep blue, olive, stone and sand all sit well. Very pale colours are fine but less forgiving over a long meal. Black reads as severe in this context and most people avoid it.

If you want the shirt and trousers to read as one considered choice rather than two separate ones, wear them as a set in the same linen, which is a useful shortcut when you have several iftars in a week. Both are in the men's collection, sold separately.

What do men wear for Eid al-Fitr?

The custom is to wear something new, or your best, for Eid prayer and the day that follows. In many families that means traditional dress, a kandura or thobe, and in many others it means a new shirt and trousers. Both are entirely normal, and expat households across the UAE do it differently from one another.

If you are dressing in Western clothing for Eid, the instinct to buy something new is the right one, and the guidance is simple.

  • Cover properly. Long sleeves, full-length trousers, closed shoes. Eid prayer is a mosque or open-ground setting and coverage matters.
  • Choose a considered colour. White is traditional and widely worn for Eid prayer. Beyond white, calm tones read better than bright ones. Sand, stone, deep blue and olive all work.
  • Make sure it is pressed. This is the day where that shows most.
  • Think about the whole day. Eid runs long. Prayer, then family, then visiting, often across several households. A fabric that stays comfortable for twelve hours matters more than one that photographs well for ten minutes.

A white or sand linen shirt handles all of that. The Italian collar reads slightly more traditional if you are wearing a jacket, and the mandarin collar reads more covered if you are not.

Is linen appropriate for a mosque?

Yes, with the same conditions that apply to any fabric. Shoulders and knees covered, which a long-sleeved shirt and full-length trousers handles, and clothing that is clean and unremarkable rather than attention-drawing.

Linen is well suited to it. It covers fully, it does not cling, and it stays comfortable when you are seated on the floor for extended periods, which stiffer fabrics do not.

One practical note. You will be removing and putting on shoes repeatedly, so trousers that sit well without needing adjustment are worth having.

Does linen wrinkle too much for Eid?

Linen wrinkles. That is flax doing what flax does, and it is the most reliable signal you are wearing genuine linen rather than a blend borrowing the word.

What is not true is the idea that linen should be worn unpressed. In Napoli, linen is ironed after every wash. It is pressed, hung and worn, and it relaxes into soft creases through the day rather than starting the day crumpled. For Eid that progression is exactly right. You start crisp and the shirt eases as the day goes on.

Press it the night before while slightly damp, or hang it in a bathroom with the shower running for ten minutes. That is the whole maintenance requirement. More in how to wash and care for linen.

Where to buy linen for Ramadan and Eid

If you are buying in-market, as of August 2026 Massimo Dutti and Charles Tyrwhitt both stock linen in UAE stores, and Ounass and Namshi carry a rotating selection. Read composition rather than listing titles, because blends are common and the word linen appears on plenty of shirts that are mostly something else.

I make Santoli Napoli for the gap I could never fill myself, which was a 100% linen shirt that tells you which city it was sewn in. Core line shirts are cut and sewn in Napoli at $139, about AED 589 at checkout in the UAE, using linen from the Albini mill in Northern Italy. Linen trousers are $99, about AED 439.

Two practical notes if you are ordering from abroad for Eid. Order early, because 8 February is the planning date for the start of Ramadan and Eid follows roughly a month later, and international shipping plus customs clearance needs runway. And be aware that since 3 August 2026 Dubai Customs exempts e-commerce shipments valued at AED 1,000 or less from customs duty, so one shirt usually clears without duty while a larger order can attract duty and VAT. Rates are shown in dirhams at checkout.

Frequently asked questions

When is Eid al-Fitr 2027?

Eid al-Fitr 2027 is expected to fall around 9 or 10 March, following a Ramadan that is expected to begin around 8 February. Both dates depend on the sighting of the crescent moon and are confirmed by the relevant authorities closer to the time.

What colour should men wear for Eid?

White is traditional and widely worn for Eid prayer. Beyond that, calm and considered tones read better than bright ones. Sand, stone, deep blue and olive all work well. The stronger convention is that the clothing is new or your best, rather than any particular colour.

Can I wear short sleeves during Ramadan?

In daytime public spaces in the Gulf, long sleeves are the more considerate choice. It is a courtesy rather than a legal requirement for non-Muslims, but it is noticed. Evening settings after iftar relax considerably.

Is linen suitable for Ramadan in February?

Yes, and February is close to ideal for it. UAE temperatures in February are comfortable rather than extreme, so a mid-weight linen shirt covers fully without any heat penalty. Linen also handles the long afternoon hours of fasting better than synthetic fabric, which traps heat and moisture.

What is the difference between a mandarin collar and an Italian collar for these occasions?

The mandarin collar has no spread or points and finishes cleanly at the neck, which reads as covered and complete without a tie. The Italian collar has a wider spread and more presence, and suits wearing a jacket. For Ramadan and for Eid without a jacket, the mandarin collar is the more natural fit.

Should I iron a linen shirt before Eid?

Yes. Press it the night before while it is slightly damp, or steam it in a bathroom. Linen is ironed after washing in Italy and the same applies here. The shirt then softens into creases naturally across the day, which is the intended look.

How early should I order clothing from abroad for Eid?

Allow several weeks. Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin around 8 February with Eid roughly a month later, so ordering in January gives room for international shipping and customs clearance. In Dubai, shipments valued above AED 1,000 attract customs duty and VAT, which can add clearance time.

Where is Santoli Napoli linen made?

The shirts are cut and sewn in Napoli, Italy. The core line uses linen from the Albini mill in Northern Italy. Core line shirts are $139, about AED 589 at checkout in the UAE, and trousers $99, about AED 439. Orders ship from Florida, with rates shown in dirhams at checkout.
