What to Pack for the Bahamas: A Man's Packing List (2026)

Short answer. For a week in the Bahamas, pack four to five collared shirts, two pairs of shorts, one pair of long trousers, swim shorts, leather sandals and one pair of clean sneakers. Nassau and Paradise Island resorts run a resort casual evening code, which means a collared shirt and long trousers at dinner, no tank tops and no beach shorts. Winter temperatures usually sit around the high 70s Fahrenheit with real humidity, which is why linen outperforms cotton there.

The Bahamas is the shortest flight from the US east coast to genuine warmth, which makes it the most common winter escape and also the one people pack for most carelessly. Two hours from a cold city does not feel like it should require a different wardrobe. It does.

Here is what actually goes in the bag, and what the resorts will and will not let you wear once you get there.

What winter in the Bahamas is like

December through March is the dry season and the reason everyone goes then. Daytime usually sits around the high 70s, evenings drop into the low 70s or high 60s, and the humidity is present but far gentler than in August.

Two things will surprise you. Evenings on the water genuinely turn cooler, enough that you want a layer. And air conditioning in the big Nassau and Paradise Island resorts is set very low, so the coldest you will be all week is at dinner.

Sun is strong and direct. This close to the tropics the UV does not care that it is January.

The packing list

Item How many Notes
Collared linen shirts 4 to 5 Two neutral, two with color or stripe. Every dinner needs one.

Linen trousers 1 Required at most resort dinners. One pair rewears all week.

Plain tees 3 Under an open shirt or alone at breakfast.
Light overshirt or jacket 1 For evening breeze and indoor air conditioning.
Leather sandals 1 Pass dress codes where rubber flip flops do not.

The Bahamas resort dress code, plainly

Nassau, Paradise Island and the Exuma resorts all run some version of resort casual in the evening. The wording differs, the practice does not.

From roughly six in the evening, in any indoor restaurant, expect to need a collared shirt and long trousers. Some restaurants inside the larger resorts accept tailored shorts and many do not, which is why one pair of trousers solves the problem permanently.

The refusals are consistent. No swimwear indoors. No tank tops. No beach cover ups past the pool. No rubber flip flops in the dining room, and this last one catches more men than anything else on the list.

A handful of the higher end restaurants and the casino floors run a stricter code that asks for a jacket. A light jacket over a linen shirt clears it. There is a full breakdown of every code in the resort dress code decoder.

Can you wear shorts to dinner in Nassau?

At a beach bar, a casual outdoor restaurant or a lunch spot, yes. In the main dining room of a resort after six, usually no.

The honest advice is to stop treating this as a question. Pack one pair of linen trousers, wear them every evening, and the entire category of problem disappears. Linen trousers weigh almost nothing, take no space and rewear across a whole week without complaint.

Why linen, in this climate specifically

The Bahamas is warm and wet in the air. That combination is where cotton loses.

Cotton takes on moisture and holds it. In humidity that moisture cannot evaporate quickly, so a cotton shirt becomes a damp layer pressed against your skin by mid morning and stays that way. Linen has a hollow fibre and a looser weave. Air moves through it, moisture moves out of it faster, and it holds its shape away from the body rather than clinging.

It also dries in a fraction of the time, which matters when you are getting in and out of salt water all week.

The trade off is wrinkling, and it is worth being direct about it. Linen creases within an hour of putting it on. That is what a flax fibre does and it is the same at every price. In Napoli linen gets ironed after every wash and then gets worn and allowed to move. If a shirt sold as linen stays perfectly flat all day, read the composition label, because something in it is not flax.

What to wear on an Exuma or swimming pig day

Almost every Bahamas trip includes a boat. This is the harshest hour of the trip for clothing, with sun overhead and sun bouncing off the water at you as well.

Swim shorts, a long sleeve linen shirt worn open over them, a hat and sandals you do not mind soaking. The long sleeve is the difference between a good afternoon and a bad two days. Linen dries fast enough that getting it wet costs you nothing.

Colors for pale sand and very pale water

Bahamian sand is close to white and the water is exceptionally light. That is a different backdrop from the darker Caribbean islands, and it changes what works.

White is the classic and it is genuinely correct here, though it disappears slightly in photographs against that sand. Sand and stone hold detail better. Mid and deep blue give you contrast, which is what the photographs need. Olive works well anywhere there is vegetation, which on the out islands is most places.

Black is the one to leave home. It holds heat and reads as a hole in every daylight photograph.

How many shirts, honestly

Four covers seven days if two of them are neutral. Neutral shirts rewear invisibly. Sand on Monday and again on Thursday is a wardrobe. A bright shirt twice in a week is a rewear and everyone can see it.

Five if you want to stop thinking about it entirely, which for a week is a reasonable thing to want.

What not to pack

  • Jeans. Heavy, hot, slow to dry, and refused at some resort restaurants anyway.
  • A dark suit. Nothing in the Bahamas requires one.
  • Rubber flip flops as your only footwear. They will keep you out of restaurants.
  • More than two pairs of shoes. Sandals and sneakers is the whole answer.
  • A loud tropical print shirt. It reads as someone who arrived yesterday.

Frequently asked questions

What should a man pack for the Bahamas?
Four to five collared shirts, two pairs of shorts, one pair of long trousers, swim shorts, plain tees, a light layer for evening, leather sandals, clean sneakers and a hat. A carry on covers a week.

What is the dress code at Bahamas resorts?
Resort casual in the evening, meaning a collared shirt and long trousers in indoor restaurants from around six. No swimwear, no tank tops, no rubber flip flops. A few higher end restaurants and casino areas ask for a jacket.

Can you wear shorts to dinner in Nassau?
At beach bars and casual outdoor restaurants, yes. In resort dining rooms after six, usually not. One pair of linen trousers removes the question for the whole trip.

How hot is the Bahamas in winter?
Daytime usually sits around the high 70s Fahrenheit from December through March, with evenings in the low 70s or high 60s. It is the dry season, so humidity is present but much lower than in summer.

Do you need long pants in the Bahamas?
Yes, at least one pair, for resort dinners. You will also want them on cooler evenings near the water.

What shoes should I bring to the Bahamas?
Leather sandals and one pair of clean sneakers. Leather sandals pass resort dress codes where rubber flip flops are refused.

Is linen good for the Bahamas?
Yes. In warm humid air linen moves air through the weave and dries faster than cotton, which absorbs moisture and holds it against the skin.

How many shirts for a week in the Bahamas?
Four to five. Two neutral shirts rewear invisibly across the week, which is what keeps the number low.

Do I need a jacket in the Bahamas in winter?
A light one, yes, for evening breeze near the water and for indoor air conditioning, which runs cold in the large resorts.
