Resort Casual Dress Code for Men: Every Code Explained

Man in a sand stripe linen shirt and white linen trousers standing at a cafe table, an example of resort casual dress for men

Short answer. Resort casual for men means a collared shirt with long trousers or tailored shorts, and closed shoes or leather sandals. Resort formal adds a jacket and takes shorts off the table. Smart casual sits between them, a collared shirt and trousers with the jacket optional. All three refuse the same short list, swimwear, tank tops, flip flops, athletic wear and anything visibly beachy after six in the evening.

Every resort and cruise line writes its own dress code, and almost none of them explain it. You get two words on a confirmation email, resort casual, and you are expected to know what that means before you pack.

Here is the honest version. The codes are not as different from each other as they sound. They all point at the same thing, a collared shirt, real trousers, and shoes that are not made of rubber. What changes between them is how much structure they expect on top.

Below is every code you are likely to meet on a warm weather trip, what it actually allows, and what to put in the bag.

The five codes, side by side

This is the table to screenshot before you pack.

Code Top Bottom Jacket Shoes
Resort casual Collared shirt, short or long sleeve Trousers or tailored shorts No Loafers, leather sandals, clean sneakers
Smart casual Collared shirt, tucked or untucked Trousers only Optional Loafers or leather shoes
Resort formal Collared shirt, usually long sleeve Trousers only Yes Leather shoes
Beach formal Collared shirt, light color Light trousers Usually, often carried not worn Leather sandals or loafers, often no socks
Country club casual Collared shirt, no logos on the chest Trousers, denim often refused Sometimes Leather shoes, no sneakers in the dining room

Read down the middle column and the pattern is obvious. Four of the five codes want long trousers. One collared linen shirt and one pair of linen trousers clears every row on that table, which is why that pairing is the most efficient thing you can pack for a warm weather trip.

What resort casual actually means

Resort casual is the most common code and the vaguest one. It exists because resorts want to stop people walking into a restaurant in swim shorts, not because they want you in a jacket.

In practice it means this. During the day, anything goes around the pool. From roughly six in the evening, in any indoor restaurant, you need a shirt with a collar and something on your legs that is not beachwear. Some resorts accept tailored shorts at dinner and some do not, so trousers are the safe answer.

What trips people up is the shoes. Rubber flip flops read as beach, and most dining rooms will turn you away in them even if the rest of the outfit is right. A leather sandal reads completely differently and passes almost everywhere.

The Italian collar linen shirts are the straightforward answer here, 100% linen, made in Napoli, $139. Sand and white are the two colors that work in every one of the five codes above.

What smart casual means, and how it differs

Smart casual is the code you meet on cruise ships and in city hotels more than at beach resorts. It is resort casual with the shorts removed and a small expectation of intent.

The difference is real but small. Under resort casual you can look like you came straight off the beach and put a shirt on. Under smart casual you are expected to look like you got dressed. Trousers rather than shorts, a shirt that has been pressed, shoes rather than sandals.

A jacket is optional and most men skip it in heat. If you want the option without carrying a blazer, an unstructured shirt worn open over a plain tee does most of the same work.

What resort formal actually means

Resort formal is where the jacket becomes real. You will see this phrasing, or a cruise line's own name for it, on cruise itineraries and at the higher end of Caribbean and Mediterranean resorts, usually for two or three evenings out of a week.

It means a jacket, a collared shirt and long trousers. It does not mean a tuxedo, it does not mean a tie, and on a warm weather itinerary it does not mean wool. A light jacket over a linen shirt with linen trousers clears it comfortably, and you will be more comfortable than the man sweating through a dark suit two tables over.

If you want to carry one thing that answers this code without a second thought, a linen shirt and trousers in a single color, worn as a set, does it. They are sold separately, and together they also clear the $200 free US shipping threshold.

Beach formal, and why it confuses everyone

Beach formal turns up almost exclusively on wedding invitations, and it is the code that generates the most panic because the two words appear to contradict each other.

They do not. Beach formal means formal intent, informal fabric. Light colors, linen or a light cotton, trousers rather than shorts, a jacket that you are welcome to carry rather than wear, and shoes you can walk on sand in. What it rules out is a dark wool suit, a tuxedo, and anything that will make you visibly miserable standing in the sun for a forty minute ceremony.

Sand, sage, light blue and navy all photograph well against water and sand. Pure white is the one color to leave alone at a wedding, for obvious reasons.

Country club casual

This one is a US specific code and it is stricter than the beach codes, not looser. Clubs in Florida, Arizona and California enforce it properly, and the enforcement usually lands on two things, denim and sneakers.

Collared shirt, long trousers, leather shoes. Many clubs still refuse denim anywhere on the property and most refuse sneakers in the dining room. Some ask for shirts to be tucked. If you are visiting someone's club as a guest, tuck it.

The things every single code refuses

Across all five, the refused list is nearly identical, which makes packing easier than it looks.

  • Swimwear of any kind indoors
  • Tank tops and sleeveless shirts
  • Rubber flip flops in restaurants
  • Athletic wear, running shorts, gym shirts
  • Beach cover ups past the pool deck
  • Anything with a large graphic or slogan on the chest

If your bag contains a collared shirt, long trousers and one pair of leather shoes, you cannot fall foul of any code on this page. Everything else is comfort.

How to pack for a trip with three different codes

A week at a resort or on a ship usually spans three codes. Days are unregulated, most evenings are resort casual, and two or three nights are smart casual or resort formal.

You do not need three wardrobes. You need one wardrobe with a jacket at the top of it.

For seven days, this covers everything.

  • Four collared linen shirts. Two neutral, sand and white, two with color or a stripe. Neutrals go with everything and rewear without looking like a rewear.
  • Two pairs of linen shorts for daytime and port days.
  • One pair of linen trousers. One is enough. Linen trousers rewear across four or five evenings if you hang them properly.
  • One light jacket or overshirt for the resort formal nights and for air conditioning, which is colder than the weather.
  • Leather sandals and one pair of clean sneakers.

That is eight garments covering every dress code you will meet and every hour of the day. There is a longer version of this arithmetic in the three shirt linen capsule wardrobe.

Why linen, specifically

Because these codes are enforced in heat. A collared shirt is not a hardship in 60°F. In 82°F with humidity it is the difference between enjoying dinner and counting the minutes.

Linen is a hollow fibre, it moves air and it moves moisture, and it does not hold heat against the skin the way cotton does once cotton is damp. That is the whole reason it has been the warm weather fabric of the Mediterranean for centuries rather than a fashion choice. We go into the actual mechanism in does linen actually keep you cool.

The trade is wrinkling. Linen creases, and it creases immediately. That is not a defect and it is not a sign of cheap fabric, it is what a flax fibre does. In Napoli linen gets ironed after every wash and then it gets worn, and by the second hour it has softened into its own shape again. If a linen shirt is not wrinkling at all, check the label, because something in it is not linen.

What to wear, by code

Resort casual. Italian collar linen shirt in sand or white, $139, with linen drawstring trousers, $99, or tailored shorts during the day.

Smart casual. Same shirt, trousers only, shirt tucked. A mandarin collar shirt also reads correctly here and needs no tie, ever.

Resort formal. A linen shirt and trousers in one color, worn as a set, with a light jacket over it.

Beach formal. Same set in sand or a light blue, jacket carried. Not white.

Frequently asked questions

What does resort casual mean for men?
A collared shirt with long trousers or tailored shorts, and closed shoes or leather sandals. No swimwear, no tank tops, no rubber flip flops in restaurants. It is the most common evening code at warm weather resorts.

Are shorts allowed under resort casual?
Tailored shorts are usually accepted during the day and at casual outdoor restaurants. Most indoor dining rooms want long trousers after six in the evening. Pack one pair of trousers and the question stops mattering.

What is the difference between resort casual and smart casual?
Smart casual removes shorts and expects a slightly more deliberate outfit, trousers and pressed shirt rather than whatever you had on at the pool. A jacket is optional under both.

Do I need a jacket for resort formal?
Yes. Resort formal is the code where a jacket becomes expected rather than optional. It does not require a tie or a tuxedo, and on a warm itinerary an unstructured light jacket over a linen shirt is correct.

Are jeans smart casual?
On a cruise or at a resort, usually yes for daytime and often no in the main dining room. At a country club, frequently refused outright. In heat they are also the least comfortable thing you could pack.

Is a polo shirt resort casual?
Yes, a polo has a collar and clears the code. It reads more casual than a button front shirt, so for the more formal evenings a linen shirt is the safer choice.

Can you wear sandals under resort casual?
Leather sandals, yes, almost everywhere. Rubber flip flops, no, and this is the single most common reason men get turned away at a resort restaurant.

What is beach formal for men?
Light colored trousers and a collared shirt in linen or a light cotton, with a jacket usually carried rather than worn. It means formal intent in informal fabric. Avoid dark wool, a tuxedo, and pure white if it is a wedding.

What is country club casual?
A collared shirt, long trousers and leather shoes. Denim is often refused entirely and sneakers are usually refused in the dining room. It is stricter than any of the beach codes.
