Which Positano Colorway Should You Buy?

The most common email I get about the capsule is which colour, not which size. Here is the honest answer for each of the eight, including the two I would not recommend as a first buy. All eight are here.

If you are only buying one

Buy White. It is the shirt that goes from a beach in the afternoon to a dinner you underestimated, and it is the one that photographs cleanly in every setting. It is also the least forgiving on stains, which is the trade.

Buy Grotta Blue if you will actually wear it more. White is the correct answer and blue is the honest one, because blue is what most men reach for four days out of seven.

All eight, colour by colour

White

The default. Works with everything, reads correct at any dress code short of black tie, and is the standard answer for a beach wedding. Slightly translucent in very bright direct sun, like all white linen. See White.

Coastal Blue

Pale sky blue, the lightest blue in the set. Best on cooler skin tones and against very bright light, where a deeper blue goes heavy. It is the thinnest colorway on stock, with L and XL already gone. See Coastal Blue.

Grotta Blue

Named for the sea caves. Mid-deep blue with green underneath it, which is why it reads richer than a flat navy in daylight. The most wearable colorway in the capsule and the one I would buy second after White. See Grotta Blue.

Midnight Blue

Near-navy. This is the evening shirt, the one that works tucked into linen trousers for dinner in a city rather than open over swim shorts. It absorbs more heat than the lighter colorways, so it is a sundown shirt rather than a midday one. See Midnight Blue.

Olive Grove

Muted green that behaves like a neutral. It sits well against sand, stone and terracotta, which is most of the Mediterranean, and it is the colorway that looks least like a shirt someone chose for you. Harder on very cool skin tones. See Olive Grove.

Coral Pink

The one men hesitate on. It is soft and sun-washed rather than bright, closer to terracotta than to pink, and it is consistently the colorway customers write back about. If you want one shirt that does not look like every other linen shirt, this is it. See Coral Pink.

Sand Stripe

Fine warm-neutral stripe. This is the third shirt in a three-shirt buy, the one that stops two solids from looking like a uniform. Most stock left of any colorway. See Sand Stripe.

Sea Stripe

Blue stripe, sharper and more graphic than Sand Stripe. Reads more deliberate, which is either what you want or exactly what you do not. Size L is sold out. See Sea Stripe.

If you are buying three

Take one white, one blue and one stripe. That is a full week in heat with two wash cycles and no day where you are visibly repeating.

What pairs with what

Every capsule colorway works over white linen drawstring trousers at $99. That is the safest bottom half and the reason white trousers exist.

Sand Beige trousers work with the blues, the stripes and White. They fight slightly with Coral Pink, where a white or a stone bottom is cleaner.

Midnight Blue is the only colorway I would tuck. The rest are cut and coloured to be worn open or loose.
