What to Pack for a Desert Safari and Dubai's Winter Season
Share
United Arab Emirates
Pack layers for the UAE between November and March, because the desert can swing from 28°C in the afternoon to 12°C after dark. For a desert safari, wear long sleeves and full-length trousers in a natural fibre, closed shoes you can empty sand from, and bring one warm layer for the evening. Linen handles the daytime heat and covers you against sun and sand, but it is not warm on its own, so a knit or overshirt is not optional after sunset.
The UAE winter is the reason people move here. From November through March the city turns outward, the terraces fill, the desert camps run every night, and the weather does something Dubai does not do for the rest of the year, which is behave.
It also catches people out. The mistake is packing for a hot country. The desert at night in January is genuinely cold, and there is a specific sight at every desert camp of men in short sleeves discovering this around 7pm.
Here is what to actually bring.
What is the weather like in Dubai from November to March?
Broadly comfortable, with a real day-to-night swing.
- November. Still warm, often high 20s to low 30s in the day, mild evenings. The tail end of summer rather than proper winter.
- December to February. The core of the season. Daytime typically low to mid 20s, evenings noticeably cooler, and occasional rain. This is when Dubai is at its best outdoors.
- March. Warming again. Days climbing back toward 30°C, evenings still pleasant. The last comfortable month before it turns.
Two things to plan for. Humidity near the coast stays higher than inland, so Dubai Marina feels different from the desert on the same day. And the desert itself amplifies everything, hotter in the sun and considerably colder at night, because sand does not hold heat the way a city does.
What should men wear on a desert safari?
Counterintuitively, cover up. This is the single piece of advice most people get backwards.
Long sleeves. In strong desert sun, covered arms are cooler than bare ones, because the fabric blocks radiant heat while still allowing airflow. This only works with a breathable natural fibre, so linen or lightweight cotton. A synthetic long sleeve traps heat and does the opposite.
Full-length trousers. Sun, sand and dune slopes all argue for them. Sand gets into everything and bare legs plus sand is uncomfortable within an hour. Linen trousers are close to ideal, light enough for the heat, loose enough to sit cross-legged in at camp.
Closed shoes. Not sandals, whatever the camp photos suggest. Sand at midday is hot enough to be a problem, and if you are walking dunes you want something you can shake out. Canvas or light leather.
Head cover. A hat matters more here than almost anywhere. The suede hat handles it, or anything with a brim.
One warm layer. A knit, an overshirt, or a light jacket. This is the item people forget. The temperature drops fast once the sun goes and desert camps are open-sided.
Why linen for the desert specifically?
Because the desert asks for two things that usually conflict. Coverage and coolness.
Flax fibre is hollow and highly absorbent, so linen pulls moisture off the skin and releases it rather than holding it. The weave is open enough that air moves through the cloth. That combination means you can wear a long-sleeved shirt in 30°C sun and be cooler than you would be in a short-sleeved cotton tee, because you have shade and airflow at the same time.
Linen also handles sand well. It does not cling the way synthetic fabric does when you have a static charge and fine sand in the air, and it shakes out cleanly.
What linen does not do is keep you warm. It has no insulating property to speak of. This is why the evening layer is not optional. Linen is your daytime answer and something else is your night answer.
The longer version of the fibre argument is in linen versus cotton, and why wear linen covers the general case.
What to pack for a week in the UAE in winter
A working list for a seven-day trip that includes a desert night, a few city days and at least one dinner where you want to look considered.
- Three linen shirts. One pale for daytime and desert, one mid tone for evenings, one mandarin collar for anything more covered or more formal. The mandarin collar and Italian collar collections between them cover it.
- Two pairs of linen trousers. Sand and white, or sand and a deeper tone. They read differently enough to feel like separate outfits.
- One warm layer. Merino knit or an unstructured overshirt. Desert nights and over-air-conditioned restaurants both need it.
- One pair of closed shoes and one pair of sandals. Closed for desert and city, sandals for the hotel and beach.
- A hat. Sun here is strong even in January.
- Swim shorts. Beach season is at its best in these months.
That is a carry-on. Linen packs small and it is meant to arrive creased, which removes most of the packing anxiety.
If you want the shirt and trousers to work as a deliberate set rather than separates, wear a shirt and drawstring pants in the same linen from the men's collection, sold separately. That is useful when you are packing light and want more outfits from fewer items.
What about Dubai's winter events?
The season has a rhythm and the dress expectations vary more than people expect.
Dubai Shopping Festival, roughly December into January. Malls and outdoor markets, lots of walking, air conditioning throughout. Comfortable shoes and a layer.
Global Village and outdoor markets. Evening events, open air, genuinely cooler after dark. Long sleeves and a knit.
Desert camps and overnight stays. Covered as above. The warm layer is the whole game.
Beach and marina days. This is the season for it. Linen over swim shorts is the standard uniform and it works because it dries fast.
Dinners and brunches. Dubai dresses for these. A pressed linen shirt and trousers is the reliable answer, and a mandarin collar handles the more formal end without needing a tie.
How do I keep linen looking right while travelling?
Linen wrinkles. That is flax doing exactly what flax does, and it is the clearest evidence that you are wearing real linen rather than a blend that borrowed the word. A shirt sold as linen that emerges from a suitcase perfectly smooth has polyester in it.
What is not true is the idea that you leave it unpressed. In Napoli, where I make these shirts, linen is ironed after every wash. Pressed, hung, worn, and it eases into soft creases through the day. That progression is the look people are actually describing when they talk about relaxed Italian dressing.
Travelling, the easiest method is steam. Hang the shirt in the bathroom while you shower for ten minutes and most of the packing creases drop out. Hotels here almost all have irons or same-day pressing. More detail in how to wash and care for linen and do linen shirts wrinkle.
Where to buy linen before a UAE trip
If you are already in the UAE, Massimo Dutti and Charles Tyrwhitt stock linen in-store, and Ounass and Namshi carry a rotating selection. Read the composition rather than the product title, because blends are common and the word linen appears on a great many shirts that are mostly something else.
I make Santoli Napoli because that was the gap I could never fill. The core line shirts are 100% linen, cut and sewn in Napoli, at $139, about AED 589 at checkout in the UAE, using linen from the Albini mill in Northern Italy. Trousers are $99, about AED 439.
If you are ordering from abroad, order with runway. Since 3 August 2026 Dubai Customs exempts e-commerce shipments valued at AED 1,000 or less from customs duty, so a larger order can attract duty and VAT, and clearance adds time. Rates are shown in dirhams at checkout.
Frequently asked questions
How cold does the desert get at night in Dubai?
Considerably colder than the city. In December and January, desert evenings can drop into the low teens Celsius and occasionally below, while the same afternoon may have been in the high 20s. Sand loses heat quickly after sunset, and desert camps are open-sided. Bring a warm layer regardless of how warm the day was.
Should I wear shorts on a desert safari?
Trousers are the better choice. Sand gets everywhere, dune slopes are abrasive, and midday sand is hot. Full-length trousers in a breathable natural fibre keep you cooler in the sun than bare legs and considerably more comfortable at camp.
Is linen warm enough for a UAE winter evening?
On its own, no. Linen is a cooling fabric with essentially no insulating property. It is the right daytime choice from November to March, but you need a knit or overshirt over it once the sun goes down, especially in the desert.
What shoes should I wear in the desert?
Closed shoes you can shake sand out of easily. Canvas or light leather work well. Sandals seem logical and are not, because midday sand is hot and fine sand between foot and sole is uncomfortable quickly.
What is the best month to visit Dubai?
December through February for the most comfortable weather, with daytime temperatures typically in the low to mid 20s Celsius and cool evenings. November and March are both good with warmer days. From May onwards the heat becomes the defining factor.
How much linen should I pack for a week?
Three shirts and two pairs of trousers covers a week comfortably, including a desert night, city days and dinners. Linen packs small, and because it is meant to crease, you are not trying to protect a press that would not survive the flight anyway.
Do I pay customs on clothing shipped to the UAE?
In Dubai, on e-commerce shipments valued above AED 1,000 including freight, yes. Expect customs duty on the CIF value plus 5% VAT on the duty-inclusive total, which comes to roughly 10% overall, plus any courier handling fee. Check whether the retailer prepays these at checkout.
