Daytime sits between 28°C and 33°C (82°F to 91°F) most of the year, with humidity that regularly holds above 80%. May through October brings afternoon rain that arrives fast and clears fast. December through April is the dry season and the reason flights cost what they do.
The number that matters is not the temperature, it is the humidity. At 80% humidity, sweat does not evaporate off cotton, so a cotton t-shirt becomes a wet t-shirt and stays that way. Linen has a hollow fibre structure that moves moisture off the skin and dries roughly four times faster. That is the entire argument.

This is the thing people get wrong. Tulum looks barefoot from the outside, and then you arrive at a beach road restaurant at nine in the evening and everyone is in linen trousers and a proper shirt.
The working rule is beach clothes until sunset, then trousers and a collared shirt. Not a jacket, not closed leather shoes, but not a t-shirt and board shorts either. A linen shirt worn open over a plain tee at dinner reads correctly in almost every Tulum venue, which is why it is the most useful single item you can pack.
Which colours work in Tulum?
Tulum is jungle green, limestone white and turquoise water. Colours that sit inside that palette photograph well and look intentional. Colours that fight it look like you packed for somewhere else.
What works: white, sand, olive, coral, faded blue, sea stripe. What does not: black, charcoal, anything heavily branded. Black absorbs heat and looks heavy against limestone, and you will feel it by 2pm.
If you are packing three shirts, white and blue are the two that do the most work. The third should be the one with some texture or a stripe, because two solid shirts across seven days starts to look like you only brought two shirts.
The honest downside of packing linen
It will crease. On the plane, in the bag, by the second hour of wear. Real 100% linen wrinkles because the fibre has no elasticity, and any shirt that stays flat all day has synthetic content in it.
In Tulum this genuinely does not matter, and it is one of the few places where a creased linen shirt reads as correct rather than sloppy.
