Short answer: The best men's linen shirts in 2026 are made from 100% linen, not a linen blend, and state the country of manufacture rather than the country of design. Santoli Napoli, Luca Faloni and Frescobol Carioca are all genuinely Italian or European made. Quince and most Amazon listings are not. Expect to pay $110 to $265 for a real 100% linen shirt, and treat anything under $50 as a blend until proven otherwise.

What makes a linen shirt actually good?
Four things, in this order.
Fibre content. 100% linen or nothing. A linen-cotton blend at 55/45 is a cotton shirt with marketing on it. It will not breathe the same way and it will not soften the same way. Check the composition label, not the product title.
Weight. Between 140 and 190 grams per square metre is the useful range for a shirt. Lighter than 140 and it goes transparent. Heavier than 190 and you have bought a summer jacket.
Where it was cut and sewn. This is the line most brands blur. "Designed in Italy" means the sketch happened in Italy. "Made in Italy" means the garment was made there. They are not the same sentence and the difference is usually about $60.
Fit through the shoulder and chest. Linen has no stretch. A shirt that fits everywhere except the shoulder is a shirt you will not wear twice.

Is a $139 linen shirt worth it over a $60 one?
Not always. If you wear a linen shirt three times a summer, buy the $60 one and enjoy it. The difference shows up in three places, and none of them matter if the shirt lives in a drawer.
First, fabric consistency. Mills like Albini in Northern Italy hold a tighter tolerance on yarn thickness, which is why the fabric drapes flat instead of puckering after two washes. Second, seam construction. A cheap linen shirt fails at the armhole and the side seam because the stitch density is too low for a fabric with no give. Third, colour depth. Cheap linen dyes shallow and goes chalky in one season.
What you are actually buying at $139 is year three. A $60 linen shirt looks fine in year one.
What I would tell you not to buy from me
If you want a linen shirt that stays smooth on a long flight, do not buy 100% linen from anyone, including me. It will crease and it will look creased. Real linen wrinkles. That is the fibre doing what the fibre does, and a shirt that does not wrinkle is a shirt with polyester in it. If a flat appearance matters more to you than breathability, buy a linen-cotton blend and be happy.
Also, if your build is very athletic through the chest with a narrow waist, Italian cut linen shirts including ours will sit loose at the waist. That is a real limitation, not a marketing softener.
How should a linen shirt fit?
Relaxed through the body, clean through the shoulder. The seam should land on the edge of your shoulder bone, not down your arm. Sleeve should finish at the wrist bone. Body should skim, not cling, because linen needs air movement against the skin to do the thing it is famous for.
For reference on ours, our model is 6'1" (185cm) and 185lbs and wears a size L. If you are between two sizes, size down. Linen relaxes after the first wash and gains roughly a centimetre through the chest. Wash it before you judge the fit.

How many linen shirts do you actually need?
Three. This is the answer almost nobody gives you because it does not sell one shirt at a time.
One white, because it works from a beach bar to a dinner where you should have worn a jacket. One blue, because it is the shirt you will reach for four days out of seven. One with texture or stripe, because two solids in a row starts to look like a uniform. Three shirts is a full week of hot weather with two wash cycles, and it is the point where a linen wardrobe stops being an experiment.

Where are Santoli Napoli shirts made?
In Napoli, Italy, by Partenopea Camicie SRLS in Melito di Napoli. Not designed in Italy, not inspired by Italy. Cut and sewn there. The core line fabric comes from Albini, a mill in Northern Italy that also supplies Luca Faloni, which is why the fabric comparison between us is closer than the price comparison suggests.

It depends on your budget and how much origin matters to you. For Italian manufacturing under $150, Santoli Napoli is the main option at $139. For Italian manufacturing where price is not the constraint, Luca Faloni at $260. For the lowest price on 100% linen, Quince at around $60, with the tradeoff that manufacturing location is not disclosed clearly.
Is Quince linen actually Italian?
Quince states that it sources European flax fabric, but the garments are manufactured in Asia. European fabric and European manufacturing are two separate claims, and only one of them is being made. If Italian manufacturing is what you are paying for, read the product page carefully before ordering.
Do linen shirts shrink?
Yes, slightly, usually around 3% to 4% on the first wash if washed warm. Wash cold and hang dry and the shrinkage is minimal. We pre-wash our fabric, so the movement after purchase is small, but it is not zero.
Are linen shirts see-through?
White linen under 140gsm can be. Ours runs heavier than that, so a white shirt is opaque in normal daylight, though very bright direct sun will show a shadow. If that bothers you, buy a colour rather than white.
Can you wear a linen shirt to a wedding?

How do you wash a 100% linen shirt?
Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, hang dry out of direct sun, iron on the linen setting while slightly damp if you want it flat. It gets softer every wash, which is the one property linen has that no synthetic reproduces.
