What to Wear to a Beach Wedding: A Men's Guide (2026)

Short answer: For a beach wedding, men should wear linen or lightweight cotton trousers in sand, stone or light blue, a 100% linen shirt in white or a soft colour, and leather sandals, espadrilles or suede loafers. No socks with sandals, no black suit, no tie unless the invitation specifically asks for one. "Beach formal" means trousers and a collared shirt with an optional unstructured jacket. "Beach casual" means the same without the jacket.

I make linen shirts in Napoli and a meaningful share of our orders go to men attending weddings in hot places, so this guide comes from the questions we actually get asked by email. If you already know the answer and just need the shirt, our men's linen shirts are $139 and ship from the US.

What does "beach formal" actually mean?

It is the most common wording on a beach wedding invitation and the least explained. Here is the working translation.

Dress code on the invite What to actually wear Jacket? Tie?
Beach casual Linen shirt, linen trousers or tailored shorts, sandals No No
Beach formal Linen shirt, linen or lightweight trousers, loafers or leather sandals Optional, unstructured No
Semi-formal / cocktail Linen or cotton suit in sand, stone or light blue, open collar shirt Yes Optional
Black tie optional (beach) Light suit or tuxedo, dictated by the couple, ask Yes Yes
No dress code stated Treat it as beach formal, you will never be wrong Optional No

Why linen and not cotton or a suit?

Three reasons, and only one of them is style.

Heat. Beach ceremonies happen in direct sun, usually in the late afternoon, usually with no shade and no air conditioning. Linen has a hollow fibre that moves moisture off the skin and dries several times faster than cotton, so you are not visibly soaked in the photographs.

Sand and salt. Wool suiting picks up salt air and holds it. Linen washes.

Proportion. A structured suit on a beach looks borrowed from a different event. An unstructured linen shirt and trousers looks like it belongs to the setting, which is the whole visual point of getting married on a beach.

What colours work at a beach wedding?

White, sand, stone, soft coral, olive and every shade of light blue. These sit inside the natural palette of sand, sky and water, which is why they photograph cleanly against it.

Avoid black and charcoal. Both absorb heat and both read as funeral in bright natural light. Avoid anything with visible branding. Avoid bright white head to toe if you are a guest, because in some settings it reads as competing with the wedding party, and if you are unsure, put white on top and a colour on the bottom rather than white on both.

If you are a groomsman, the colour is not your decision. Ask the couple, and ask early, because matching four men across four different body types takes longer than anyone expects.

What should the groom wear to a beach wedding?

The groom needs one degree more than the guests, not three. If guests are in linen shirts, the groom wears a linen shirt with a co-ordinated trouser in the same fabric, or adds an unstructured jacket that comes off after the ceremony.

A full linen co-ord in a single tone is the most reliable groom look for a beach ceremony. It reads deliberate in photographs, it survives heat, and it does not look like a suit that lost an argument with the weather. Our linen co-ord sets pair shirt and trousers in matched fabric for this reason.

The part nobody tells you about linen at weddings

It creases, and it creases in the photographs.

Real 100% linen has no elastic recovery, so by the time the ceremony ends you will have soft creases across the lap and the inside of the elbow. This is normal, it is what linen does, and every photograph you have ever admired of a beach wedding features it. What you can control: arrive with the shirt pressed, hang it in the bathroom during a shower on the morning, and do not sit in a car for an hour in it if you can avoid it. What you cannot control is the rest, so make peace with it in advance rather than at 4pm.

If a perfectly flat appearance matters more to you than comfort, buy a linen-cotton blend. I sell 100% linen and I would still rather tell you that than have you disappointed on the day.

Shoes for a beach wedding

If the ceremony is on sand, you will be barefoot or in something that survives sand. Leather sandals, espadrilles or suede loafers worn without socks. Not flip flops, not athletic sandals, not dress shoes with leather soles that will be ruined in eleven steps.

Bring a second pair for the reception if it moves onto a deck or indoors. Suede loafers do both jobs if you only want to pack one.

What to pack if the wedding is part of a longer trip

Most beach weddings are attached to three to five days somewhere hot, which means the wedding outfit is one of several. The efficient version is three linen shirts, not one.

White for the ceremony. A colour for the welcome dinner. A stripe or texture for the recovery lunch the next day. Two pairs of linen trousers cover the evenings, and the same trousers you wore to the ceremony work again on day three with a different shirt.

Three shirts from us is $375.30 with the automatic 10% that applies at three. Five is 15%. See the men's collection, or the linen drawstring trousers at $99.

FAQ

Can I wear a linen suit to a beach wedding?

Yes, and in sand, stone or light blue it is the correct answer for a semi-formal beach wedding. Keep it unstructured, skip the tie unless asked, and be prepared to remove the jacket after the ceremony because almost everyone does.

Can men wear shorts to a beach wedding?

Only if the invitation says beach casual and only tailored shorts, never athletic or cargo. If the invitation says nothing, wear trousers. Being slightly overdressed at a wedding costs you nothing.

Do I wear socks to a beach wedding?

No. Sandals, espadrilles and loafers are all worn bare at a beach wedding. If you are wearing a full suit and closed leather shoes, use no-show socks.

What colour shirt should a man wear to a beach wedding?

White is the safest and photographs best against sand and water. Light blue, sand and soft coral all work. Avoid black, avoid heavy patterns, and avoid matching the groomsmen colour if you are a guest.

Is a white linen shirt too casual for a wedding?

Not for a beach wedding. A well fitting 100% linen shirt in white with linen trousers is the standard beach formal answer, and it reads more appropriate to the setting than a suit does.

How far in advance should I buy my beach wedding outfit?

Three to four weeks minimum. Linen needs one wash before wearing to soften and settle the fit, and if the size is wrong you need time to exchange it. Ordering the week of is how men end up in a shirt that fits at the shoulder and nowhere else.
