Short answer: Yes. Linen conducts heat away from the body roughly five times faster than cotton, absorbs up to 20% of its weight in moisture before it feels wet, and dries about four times faster. The fibre is hollow and stiff, so the cloth holds itself off the skin and lets air move underneath. Linen stops working when it is worn tight, when it is blended with polyester, or when it is under 140gsm and goes transparent instead of breathable.

Every linen brand says breathable. Almost none of them say why, which makes it sound like a slogan. It is not. There are three measurable properties doing the work, and knowing them also tells you when linen is the wrong choice.
Why linen feels cooler than cotton
Thermal conductivity. Linen moves heat away from the skin far faster than cotton at the same fabric weight. Heat generated by your body passes through the cloth and dissipates into the air instead of building up against you. This is the single biggest reason linen feels cold to the touch when you first put it on.
Moisture absorption. Flax fibre absorbs roughly 20% of its own weight in water before the cloth feels damp to the skin. Cotton reaches that threshold much sooner. In practical terms, linen manages sweat invisibly for longer.
Drying speed. Linen dries around four times faster than cotton. A shirt that gets damp at midday is dry again by mid-afternoon, which is why linen does not develop the heavy clinging feel cotton gets in humidity.
Fibre stiffness. This is the one nobody mentions. Flax fibre is rigid, so linen cloth stands away from the body instead of draping onto it. That air gap between shirt and skin is where the cooling actually happens.

When linen does not keep you cool
When it fits close. A slim linen shirt cancels the air gap and gives up most of the advantage. This is why Italian linen shirts are cut relaxed and why a tight linen shirt feels no better than cotton.
When it is a blend. A 55/45 linen-cotton mix behaves mostly like cotton. Anything containing polyester behaves like polyester. Check the composition label rather than the product name, because "linen-look" and "linen-feel" mean no linen at all.
When it is too light. Below about 140 grams per square metre linen goes transparent without breathing meaningfully better. The useful shirting range is 140 to 190gsm.
In still, humid air. Linen depends on air moving through it. In 90% humidity with no breeze, nothing keeps you comfortable, and linen is only the least bad option rather than a solution.
Does colour matter?
Yes, more than people expect in direct sun. Dark fabric absorbs more solar radiation, so a black linen shirt in midday sun genuinely runs hotter than a white one. Out of direct sun the difference collapses to almost nothing.
The practical rule: white, sand and pale blue for midday, deeper colours for evening. That is most of the reasoning behind how a Mediterranean wardrobe is coloured.
Long sleeves or short sleeves in heat?
Long, if the sun is on you. A loose long sleeve in 100% linen shades your forearms while still moving air across them, which is a net gain in strong sun. This is why desert and Mediterranean dress has been long-sleeved for several thousand years.
Short sleeves win indoors, in shade, and in high humidity with no sun.
